CASE STUDY: REIMAGINING MOBILITY FOR FORD

REIMAGINING THE FUTURE OF MOBILITY

Reimagining Mobility Studio was a collaboration with Ford Innovation Studio in Palo Alto and educational institutions CCA & Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. The objective of the studio was to discover new and connected solutions for Ford for a positive future of mobility in urban spaces. My role as the lead faculty was to co-design the mentorship and facilitation process of the innovation studio and guiding the students’ exploratory design journey.

CHALLENGE:

How might we teach design students to turn ambiguity into value for new business models when reimagining the future of mobility?

SOLUTION:

I implemented a toolkit full of design thinking tools and best practices as a part of the course design. The students were guided through a co- facilitation process to support their exploratory design journey. The second phase of the facilitation process focused on harnessing ambiguity and creating connected experiences that are inspiring. The third phase of the facilitation and mentorship focused on how to tell a compelling story of their creation.

IMPACT:

  • As a direct result of this mentorship the ID teams were able to navigate emerging design and business methodologies that were best aligned with Ford’s needs.

  • Led to a more connected and sustainable approach for embedding design thinking into Ford’s vision of reimagining the future of mobility for its organization.

  • Generated future mobility experience strategies with low cost & time efficiency.

  • The Ford Team presented the innovative concepts as a part of their strategic initiatives for future of mobility to their headquarters.

  • As a direct result of the success of the studio, students were hired to join Ford’s research team.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

“The quality of the works students actually put out was amazing.”

Donna L. Bell- Director of Ford Research and Innovation Lab Operations, Ford Motor Company

“I believe for a designer to be successful, you have to be a sociologist, an anthropologist, as well as a great artist. Someone who can visualize, a dreamer. Someone who can imagine these things but can also bring them to life. Clearly the students of CCA have demonstrated that.”

Antonio Priozzi- Design Manager, Global Strategic Design, Ford Motor Company
