CASE STUDY: ECO HOUSE PROJECT, A DEMONSTRATION IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING
ECO HOUSE- A DEMONSTRATION HOME AND GARDEN IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING
In 2000, I had the opportunity to lead Eco House’s original education and community initiatives and collaborate with its founder, Karl Linn. I co-created the energy efficiency and sustainable living design workshops and community garden workshops based in Permaculture principles.
CHALLENGE:
- How might we help The Berkeley Eco House Project utilize limited resources to explore, design and implement viable, innovative community volunteer integration & education models for sustainable living and demonstration for a circular economy?
SOLUTION:
- In order to organize one of the first Sustainable Community Education Models, we invited a number of external professionals to work together to plan the curriculum.
- Phase one included Exploration of Topics, Phase two focused on investigative programming opportunities, phase three for design doing where we began an outline of high level strategies. Phase 4 was implementation
- I was responsible for the planning and execution of Designing & Implementing the Community Education program.
IMPACT:
- The community led initiative became an example for restoring ecological systems and building healthy, stable communities.
- Eco House became a program of the Ecology Center, and after almost two decades still a popular demonstration site for the Ecology Center’s many classes and workshops on sustainable living techniques.
- Eco House demonstrates ecological ways of living that are accessible and affordable to people of all ages, ethnic/racial backgrounds, and income levels.
